Convention updates

Aug. 7, 2020

Scholastic journalism family,

The Fall 2020 JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention will move to a fully virtual experience, accessible to all interested advisers and students at an affordable, discounted rate. The dates for the convention will remain the same — Nov. 19-22, 2020.

It is our hope that despite the continued challenges facing the education community and the larger global population, you have remained safe and healthy and are willing to accept our support throughout the journey ahead. JEA and NSPA understand teachers need help. The long-standing mission of our organizations — to bring together a community of journalism educators and their students, to provide rich resources and exciting experiences, and to motivate scholastic media participants through unwavering encouragement — has never been more critical.

The national dialogue regarding back-to-school mandates has been exhausting and ever-changing. The requirement to concurrently develop in-person, hybrid and online lessons to prepare for all possible scenarios is beyond any previously experienced expectation. And ultimately, to juggle this new version of work life, with an unimaginably demanding home life, even without the virus directly involved, requires super-human resilience. Thank you for your commitment to educating, nurturing and protecting aspiring young journalists everywhere.

To serve as many advisers and students as possible, rates have been reduced to allow for greater participation.

Early-bird pricing
Members: $39  /  Non-members: $54

Regular pricing
Members: $49  /  Non-members: $64

Attendees will gain access to more than 100 sessions of original programming, as well as access to industry professionals via virtual face-to-face meetings, to exhibitors and college recruiters, and to multiple keynote addresses, which combined, represents extensive amounts of valuable material aimed at becoming part of your solution for a successful school year.

We know teachers like to plan, and we hope releasing this information now about the virtual format is helpful, though more details will follow as soon as possible.

Scholastic journalism family,

JEA and NSPA are working on your behalf to modify our offerings, to solve unique challenges and to bring us together, even as new routines become old, as separation replaces connection and as questions remain unanswered.

Planning for the Fall JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention in Orlando started nearly a year ago, and while the travel and meeting landscape has changed drastically, the planning continues. A convention will take place. Whether or not an in-person meeting is possible is still unknown, but plans are in motion for a hybrid convention model to welcome in-person attendees, as well as accommodate virtual attendees in an interactive online platform.

We know you may be looking for concrete details to pass along to administrators, students and parents. Unfortunately, we cannot offer those specifics yet. While we continue to develop plans and build the schedule of sessions and activities, we appreciate your patience. We will provide another update in early August.

Mark your calendars for Nov. 19-22, 2020. If a resurgence of COVID-19 this fall forces closures and travel bans, the JEA/NSPA convention experience on those dates will be immersive and fully digital.

It is clear a great number of schools might ban travel out of an abundance of caution; at the same time, funding may be limited as school and personal budgets tighten. Because of both factors, JEA and NSPA will strive to deliver a truly unique convention experience wherever you are. We will continue to evaluate the ability to host those who can travel to an amazing Orlando resort – Marriott World Center. More information about the in-person offering will come early August.

JEA and NSPA are in this with you and look forward to serving you this fall.
